Did you know there are health benefits to walking barefoot in the grass, on the beach, or wading in a river? Hopefully by now you’ve been able to do some of these things this summer and have you noticed how calming and good it feels? Well here’s the science behind it. Oh I love this stuff!
Grounding or Earthing
“Grounding or Earthing is the process of absorbing the earths free flowing electrons from its surface through the soles of our bare feet or skin. Our bodies were created to work electrically with the constant flow and exchange of energy from the earth. Dr. Christopher, Master Herbalist
This electricity is essential to our bodies but must be fresh and free flowing. It comes in through the top of the head, down the spine, through the body and is then grounded into the earth. Our rubber and plastic-soled shoes actually interfere with this flow and disconnect us from the earth’s natural electron flow. It becomes static and toxic and builds up in our bodies.
Placing the soles of our feet on the earth daily allows our bodies to absorb the negative electrons from the earth’s surface and helps our bodies remain at the same electrical charge as the earth.
We are Electrical Beings
Electrical signals in our bodies control our heartbeat, nervous systems and the flow of blood throughout our body. When we ground to the earth our sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems become more balanced and studies have proven this to have many health benefits.
Oh and by the way did I mention that we have over 7000 nerve endings on each foot! In Reflexology we work with reflex points on the feet which correspond to every gland, organ, and body part. Who knew the soles of the feet could hold such a profound aspect to our health.
Benefits of Grounding
- Decreases inflammation
- Decreases anxiety, depression, and stress
- Increases hormone balance
- Decreases premature aging
- Helps improve sleep
- Increases oxygenation and blood circulation
- Brings our parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system into balance
Grounding through Intention
“We can also ground ourselves through intention by focusing our attention on the soles of our feet. This helps us to connect with our body and anchors us in the present moment. This grounding of our energy in our bodies is very healing.”
There is a saying from the Buddha, “If one would keep their attention in the soles of their feet sitting, standing, laying down they would cure thousands of illnesses.”
“When we are grounded we feel greater strength, support, stability, flexibility, balance, and a sense of peace and calm. Our lives will begin to flow with greater ease and joy.” Marie Dotts, Tai Chi Chih instructor
I invite you all to kick off your shoes daily and enjoy the benefits of the ground below you!
Namaste my dear friends,
Joanie
